Donate and Assemble Backpacks
June 23 @ 11:15 am - 12:00 pm
This is your opportunity to be a hands-on helper right after worship in Room 3 of the Christian Education building.
The Rev. Ann Helmke, Community Faith-Based Liaison for the City of San Antonio Department of Human Services, reports that only in the last couple of months, the City of San Antonio has received more than 16,000 immigrants who are on their way to other destinations after being processed at the border. That number is about three times the number of immigrants San Antonio helped to host after Hurricane Katrina. $90,000 was spent just in the last week to help transport immigrants from San Antonio to their destinations.
On Sunday after worship, we will assemble backpacks to be distributed by Interfaith Welcome Coalition (IWC) to the immigrants who are passing through San Antonio. The backpacks contain hygiene items, snacks, and drinks for the journey, as many of the immigrants arrive with nothing and must journey much further by bus to get to the home of family or friends who have agreed to house them while they await their immigration hearing.
A $25 donation covers the cost of one backpacks – make checks payable to IWC with “backpacks” in the memo line. Online donations CAN BE MADE HERE. We plan to assemble around 150 backpacks – so all are welcome!
