Weekly Announcements

  • UPC’s newsletter, “The Multitude” is available online. Printed copies are also available in the Narthex, Administration Building and Center for Education.  Audio recordings of Sunday sermons are on our website
  • The UPC Member Directory is now online. This is a password protected section and individuals will need to set up an account and enter an access code (provided by the church office.)  In Touch with UPC, a weekly email newsletter with brief overviews of current events, is mailed out Thursday afternoons. Include your email address on the friendship pads to be on this email list.
  • Equal Exchange fairly traded coffee, tea and chocolates can be purchased in the church office.
  • Hearing amplification devices and large print bulletins/hymnals may be obtained from an usher.
  • Partnership of Prayer. Over 95 people are currently united in praying for others as needs arise. If you would like to participate in this prayer ministry, or if you have a prayer request, please contact the church office or Ruth Ann McIver (ruthann@mciverproperties.com or 210-822-0021). Prayer Request Slips are in the pew racks. Place in the offering plate or turn in to the church office. There is also a prayer request form on our website
  • On Sunday, May 19, at 3:00pm, the UPC Children’s Choir will present the musical “The Story-Tellin’ Man” by Ken Medema. As the title implies, this is a show about the parables of Jesus - the woman who has lost a coin, the shepherd who has lost a sheep, the prodigal son, and the Good Samaritan. You’ll relive these timeless stories as they are acted out by children from the choir and some of the youth group members. Last year’s show was a real treat for all those who attended. We have some extremely talented young people in our church! They’ll entertain you as they sing and act out Jesus’ lessons that still have relevance for us today. Please join us.
  • The art exhibit in the CE Forum during April and May is San Antonio artist Lyn Belisle’s “Places of Belonging,” a collection of collages that span time through the use of images from art books and catalogs and photographs taken by the artist herself. In her work Belisle collects analogies and ambiguities like bits of metal around a magnet, centering on a particular premise. These create new contexts for the images that impart new messages to the individual viewer.
  • The Worship & Arts Committee is currently having a Hymnal Fund Campaign. You can purchase hymnals in honor of or in memory of those special people in your life. The church purchased 300 regular hymnals at $15 each and 10 large print hymnals at $25 each. So far, $3,331 has been given. Please use the pink envelopes for your purchases or contact the church office to see how to make your purchases.
  • The Pentecost Offering will be taken on Sunday, May 19. This is one of the PC (USA) special offerings that UPC participates in each year. Giving to the Pentecost Offering makes it possible for the church to encourage, develop, and support its young people, and address the needs of at-risk children. Forty percent of this offering is retained by individual congregations wanting to make an impact in the lives of young people within their own community. This year, these receipts will be sent to Presbyterian Children’s Home and Services (PCHAS.) Please consider making a generous donation to support these children.
  • Camp scholarship forms for John Knox Ranch are in the Narthex and on David Germer’s office door. They are due by May 12 and notifications of receipts will be done by May 31.
  • You are invited to the Bexar County Detention Ministries, Inc. (BCDM) New Beginnings Luncheon honoring Harvey E. Najim, of the Najim Family Foundation, on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, from 11:30am-1:30pm. The event will be held at the Whitley Theological Center at the Oblate School of Theology (285 Oblate Dr, 78216.) Individual tickets are $75. Please see Renee Murray if you are interested.
  • From May 13 through May 24, Kelly will be traveling to Bosnia-Herzegovina and Istanbul, Turkey on a study tour with Professor Aaron Tyler from St. Mary’s University, along with graduate students in international relations and a few people from the broader San Antonio community. The purpose of the trip is to understand more deeply the sources of the Balkan conflict in the 1990s, and to learn about peacemaking and reconciliation work in the last two decades. It will be an opportunity to learn more about war and peace, and interfaith conflict and reconciliation. Kelly plans to make regular postings on her facebook page, so feel free to send her a “friend request” in the next few days. Some items area likely to show up on her blog at www.kellysallen.blogspot.com. The worship service on May 26 will include reflections on the trip. In the case of an emergency involving the need for pastoral care, contact the church at 210-732-9927 during office hours or Deacon Moderator, Jen Tingle at 210-829-1483 on evenings or weekends. Anastasia or Jen will contact the pastor on call concerning the emergency.

  • UPC’s Welcoming Task Force would like to inform you of two ways you can “Speak Up for the City-Wide Human Rights Ordinance for San Antonio.” 1. REGISTER YOUR SUPPORT. Contact Adam Greenup, the mayor’s LGBT liaison by e-mail (adam.greenup@sanantonio.gov) or by cell/text (210.286.6775) with: “Hello, my name is _____. I am a resident of San Antonio and live in District _____. I’m asking Mayor Castro to support a citywide Human Rights Ordinance in San Antonio because everyone should have a fair chance to work hard and get ahead.” Both Adam Greenup and Diego Bernal (city councilman, District 1) have stated that these calls/contacts are extremely important and are shared with the mayor. 2. ATTEND A SPECIAL MAY 21ST CITY COUNCIL GOVERNANCE MEETING. Come out and join us on May 21 at City Hall (100 Military Plaza, Media Room, 1st Floor) for a special Governance Committee Meeting. Wear red and arrive by 12:30pm to get through security in time for the 1:30pm meeting. Take a stand with CAUSA, a coalition of activists from local LGBT organizations, in support of fairness and equality in San Antonio.

  • If anyone from UCP wants to make a donation to Christian Assistance Ministry (CAM), May is a good month to do it because the Wade Richmond Foundation is having a $100,000 Matching Gift program. Every dollar raised and check mailed to CAM during the month will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $100,000. Checks need to be made out to CAM (with a May date) and mailed to The Pizza Hut Office,   C/O CAM Matching Grant, 1009 Austin Hwy, SA, TX 78209.

  • Please join us for a “come and go” open house to say goodbye to Adam, Keri, Stuart, and Elaine Kinsey on Saturday, June 1, 2013, 4:00pm - 7:00pm at the home of Cathy Leary and Bill Germer (115 Abiso Ave, 78209.) Please bring a finger food snack to share (beer, lemonade and water provided) and a card or note sharing a memory with the Kinseys. (In case of rain, this event will be held in the church’s Community Room.)

  • “These Are Our Stories, Y’all!” Sunday, June 2, 4:00 - 5:30 pm at UPC. The UPC Youth have been working in groups to create “retellings” of significant stories from the Hebrew Testament. In retelling these stories, we are reminding ourselves and each other that these are OUR stories, for that is what the Bible is- the stories that make up the Big Story that God is telling with God’s people, and with our lives! We want to know these stories (and want to help you know these stories) so well that they get into our bones and shape us as we live into the story of God redeeming the world. If you love music, movies, musical theater, soap operas, the Old West, Charlie Chaplin, action, comedy, drama, or our incredible youth -- you will want to come see the ways they have chosen to tell these stories- their stories- our stories!

  • You’re invited to the Bexar County Detention Ministries, Inc. (BCDM) New Beginnings Luncheon honoring Harvey E. Najim, of the Najim Family Foundation, on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, from 11:30am-1:30pm, at the Whitley Theological Center at the Oblate School of Theology (285 Oblate Dr, 78216.) Individual tickets are $75. Please contact Renee Murray (210-737-1579 or 2rs@sbcglobal.net) if you are interested.
